Is Your Child Depressed?

With depression issues being prevalent in millions of people all over the world, this unfortunately means that your child might end up becoming depressed as well. The sad part about this is that children and teenagers tend to keep their feelings to themselves moreso than expressing them in a productive way, so it can be difficult at times to know for sure whether your child is having serious problems with depression.

Once you become aware that your child is depressed, it is extremely important to let them know that talking can go a long way in aleviating the negative feelings they are having. Making their concerns known to those who care about them will make it possible for them to receive the help and support they need to get past those feelings and get out of their depressive state. But how do you go about figuring out whether your child is depressed to begin with? The following warning signs should help you stay in tune with what your child may be going through so that you can help them.

Often times, depression will manifest itself in children and teens through motivational problems. Things that your child has always been able to do easily become more and more difficult. This lack of motivation for them to do the things they would otherwise be doing, such as getting their schoolwork done on time and correctly, not showing up for their summer job, or even not wanting to spend as much time with their friends can all be indicators that they are depressed.

Going one further, your child may start to withdraw themselves socially. This can be anything from spending less time with friends, as mentioned above, to spending less time with their family. If they simply want nothing to do with anyone else, they may be suffering from depression.

Sleep is always a good indication of depression in both children and adults. If your child normally sleeps through the night and is relatively easy to wake up in the morning, but then starts waking in the middle of the night and wants to sleep in in the morning when they should be getting ready for school, it's possible that they are depressed about something.

Most of the time, if they are sad about something, they will be able to tell you exactly what they are upset about. With depression, these feelings of sadness, and more importantly what is causing them, can be difficult to figure out. If your child has sudden bouts of sadness and is unable to figure out why they are sad to begin with, it is imperative that you have them seen by a medical professional as soon as possible. This is often an indicator of something more serious than being "down".

Teenagers often find themselves drawn to drugs and alcohol if they are depressed, because they are looking for a way to feel better. It is not always obvious when your child is using drugs or alcohol to self-medicate, but if you know or suspect that they have turned to this dangerous pasttime, make sure to get them some help right away.

Evaluating your child at home for depression symptoms can be difficult, but it is something you need to do in order to make sure that your child can live a happy and productive life. If you have any concerns that your child is suffering from depression, do not wait. Have them evaluated by a qualified professional so that they can be treated, if necessary.
