Depression and Helping Yourself

If you suffer from depression, then the odds are pretty good that you are either on or have considered taking medication as a method to deal with it. If you are thinking about trying to get on medication, or if you currently take anti-depressants, you may be wondering whether there is anything else you can do to make sure that the depression does not get any worse than it already is - and maybe help get rid of it entirely. Well, there is no quick fix when it comes to depression, but there are things you can do, outside of taking anti-depressants, to make dealing with depression a little bit more bearable.

One of the most important things to do, or not do, when dealing with depression is avoid alcoholic beverages and illicit drugs at all costs. If you are on anti-depressants, drugs and alcohol work only to reduce the effectiveness of the medication, thus making the treatment of your depression obsolete. But even if you are not on medication, drugs and alcohol will only mask the problem. When you are sober again, the depression symptoms will come back, and usually much worse than they were before.

Get a hobby. Seriously. Finding something constructive to do with your time, especially if it is something you enjoy doing, will get your mind off of the depression and allow you to focus on something positive for a change. These little things can make all the difference in the world toward combating depression issues, but make sure the hobby is not harmful toward yourself or anyone else.

An extremely effective way to deal with depression is to remain active, healthy, and fit. When you take the time to exercise, do healthy meal planning, and generally take care of yourself, it boosts your self esteem and can go a long way to blast away depression. You do not need an expensive health club membership in order to exercise. Even if you set aside enough time to walk a mile each day, it will be better than letting yourself slump into depression.

Writing is another great way to help with depression issues. Keeping a diary or journal, even if you are a guy, will give you the opportunity to get things off your chest and keep track of your depression. Use it for everything. Jot down what you did today, write about things that bothered you or made you happy, and keep track of things that tend to set your depression off. Before long, you will learn to recognize your depression triggers so that you can avoid them.

If you can, you should consider getting a pet. So many people who suffer from depression feel worthless and do not think they have any purpose in life, and a pet can help with those feelings. Dogs are especially good for depression sufferers because they create a routine all by themselves, since they need to be fed and walked on a regular basis throughout each day. Not only will you gain a companion that will provide you with unconditional love and that will listen when you need to get things off your chest, but you will have a friend that depends on you to focus on their needs instead of your depression.
